Weapon X: Biographical Information On Known Mutants
As the only surviving member of his family after an internment at a Nazi prison camp, Erik Lensherr saw the kind of inhumanity ruthless, amoral human beings were capable of inflicting upon the world. These brutal events became a black mark forever burned in his memory, fueling his belief that mutants like himself can only be free if they enslave the rest of the human race before it enslaves them. Never again does he want to face the horror and degradation he and his people faced in World War II.

While in Israel, performing volunteer work with Holocaust survivors, Erik befriended a young telepath named Charles Xavier. As they spoke of their mutual mutant status, Charles revealed that he foresaw a planet where mutants and humans could peacefully coexist - a viewpoint diametrically opposed to that of Erik, who believed mutants would merely be the next in a long line of minorities read to be exploited and persecuted for their differences. He was unwilling to stand by and watch that terrible history repeat itself.

Eric formed the Brotherhood of mutants, a terrorist mutant society who acted on his every whim.

Erik was given the mutant "cure" against his will by X-Men Wolverine and Beast.
